The diminutive Pat Doherty was first selected in the Australian team in 1952 and captained Australia on its maiden tour of England in 1956.

In the first ever Test match played between the two countries in London, Australia won 14-11 and went onto record a 3-0 sweep of the series.

Doherty's speed and ingenuity saw her credited with introducing the skill of passing on the run in netball.

She was known as a mercurial player who took that extra step and delivered the ball in flight.
