Noela Olsen (nee Routley) served as vice-captain of Australia’s triumphant 1971 Netball World Cup team that reclaimed the world title off New Zealand when the tournament was played in Jamaica for the first time.
She was first named in the Australian squad in 1967 and the 1969 tour of New Zealand was where she made her Test debut.
A close-checking wing defender, Olsen’s ability to anticipate where the ball was going allowed her to pick off numerous intercepts a match.
Her speed, strong throwing and jumping ability were also assets in setting up attacking moves for her club side, Victorian team and Australia over many years.
She gave back to the game coaching representative and junior teams in Anglesea and Geelong and also contributed to Lorna McConchie’s book How the Play Netball published back in the 1970’s.
