Wilma Shakespear (nee Ritchie) is among a select group that have played and then coached Australian sides at the Netball World Cup.

A hard-working defender, Shakespear was a member of the inaugural Australian team to win the world title in England in 1963.

She then coached Australia to three world championships, winning gold in 1971 (Jamaica) and 1979 (Trinidad & Tobago). She led the 1987 team that won silver in Glasgow.

Shakespear went on to make her biggest contribution to the sport off the court, in High Performance and was a key figure in elite netball programs for 30 years. She was the inaugural netball head coach when the Australian Institute of Sport first opened in Canberra in 1981.
