A background in basketball gave Yvonne Hale (nee Waters) the ideal skills to play as a goal keeper for her state Western Australia and later Australia.
Hale was first named in the Australian squad in 1972 but it wasn’t until the 1979 Netball World Cup, played in Trinidad and Tobago, where she made her international debut.
A tenacious tall defender, her basketball skills gave Hale a good understanding of zoning and screening her opponents and also an ability to hold shooters.
Hale, who also earned a `B’ Grade umpire accreditation, later served as a senior selector and coach of Western Australia’s state teams.
