After another clinical display the Australian Diamonds have made it four wins on the trot with a 79-33 victory over Wales, setting up a blockbuster match with Jamaica to complete the pools matches.
The 45-goal margin came to fruition after a surging second half where the team looked to be cohesive from every angle.
Midcourter Paige Hadley was forced out of the match after suffering a calf injury against South Africa the day prior.
Ash Brazill, Liz Watson and Sunday Aryang held up the midcourt during the first quarter, producing an exciting performance.
Wales entered the match looking to cause chaos with a powerful attack end. Courtney Bruce and Sarah Klau were quick to shut their hopes down, getting tips and touches to the ball.
Both teams demonstrated speed between the thirds, however Australia’s goal circle were just too strong with Cara Koenen and Gretel Bueta a formidable duo filled with drive.
Koenen’s work under the post gave Bueta the perfect opportunity to position herself when and where needed.
Cara Koenen's performance in the circle was outstanding.The score 42-18 at half time, midcourt mistakes hurt the Welsh and the Diamonds really capitalised. Half time gains sat at 13 for the team, Bruce an absolute menace around the circle with six deflections.
A 37 goal second half for Australia showed promise for Kiera Austin’s wearing of the wing attack bib, her connections with Watson in the midcourt and Koenen, Bueta and Steph Wood in goals undeniably sharp.
“I did start out my netball career in wing attack, so it does feel quite freeing to be back in it,” Austin said post match.
“I do think our versatility is our biggest strength. Everyone slots in where they need to go and does their job on court.
“Not to mention, Gretel, Cara and Steph all make my job quite easy to place the ball in the circle.”
Austin has been surrounded by family throughout her debut Commonwealth Games campaign.
“It’s so special having my Scottish family over here and them getting to see me wear the green and gold for the first time, as well as my sister and my partner seeing me in the Australian colours," she said.
The Diamonds will take on Jamaica in two days' time in their final match of the pools.
“I think it’s going to be a really tough one against Jamaica, but we have been building and testing a few different combinations, so we'll be prepared," Austin added.
