I want to thank everyone who has gone out of their way to send their warmest wishes over the last 48 hours. I am absolutely thrilled, honoured, proud and somewhat nervous about the opportunity to represent the Australian Diamonds at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Yesterday I was asked if this selection has been the most special yet? I said No - they've all been special and provided different emotions, but equal amounts of pride and excitement. In my opinion not one selection should be taken for granted and you are never owed anything. This time does mean something different to me though - I am returning to represent my country as a Mum. My life priorities have changed and each day is not just about me, it’s about our boy Barney, ensuring he wants for nothing and knows nothing but love!
Obviously, this preparation has been very different; I haven’t been out on court for the best part of 18 months, but I know every mother can attest that delivering a baby and taking care of a little human makes any pre-season look like a walk in the park! Sleepless nights, whole new level of organisation and busier than ever while balancing a training schedule has been challenging! Ironically, I feel refreshed, passionate, ready and incredibly excited about what lies ahead.
I’m certainly no trail blazer; there have been many inspirational women before me returning with kids. Netball is leading the way for women’s sport in Australia and I am proud to be a part of this shift; I will be forever in debt to our game. I do hope this sends a message to our next generation that careers don’t have to end because you want to start a family. We're fortunate to have choices and as women I think it helps to encourage each other to choose what works for you. I hope all young women from all walks of life learn that aspirations and dreams are possible through every stage of life.
Finally, no matter how much outside praise has come my way, there is one clear fact that will never be lost on me... I didn't do this alone. To my husband Mark, my Mum, Zelda extended family, friends, coaches and netball community, thank you for your love, support and tolerance to put up with me when the going gets tough. Stick with me: I will need you every step of the way. I'm excited to see many familiar faces in the crowd at the Commonwealth Games, but there is one that will mean the most to me and that is Barney Ross Gilbride.
