Netball Australia is delighted to be partnering with the New South Wales Government in bidding to host the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney and regional New South Wales.
At the Samsung Australian Diamonds 2019 Netball World Cup farewell luncheon today, the New South Wales Government announced the bid will be part of its commitment to bring ‘10 World Cups in 10 Years’ to New South Wales.
Netball Australia CEO Marne Fechner is thrilled to confirm that Australia hopes to host the world’s premier netball event in 2027, Netball Australia’s 100th anniversary year.
“We delivered the most successful Netball World Cup in history here in Sydney in 2015 and our ambition is to lift the bar even higher and bring the world to New South Wales to celebrate netball and women’s sport,” she said.
“With a netball footprint of more than 1.2 million people across Australia, we know how important it is to the netball community and our elite athletes to host another World Cup on home soil.
“The 2027 Netball World Cup would bring 10 days of world-class netball to Sydney and regional New South Wales and we know we’ll deliver the best netball event the world has ever seen.”
New South Wales Minister for Sport John Sidoti said the bid has all the right ingredients for success.
“The world’s best players could be on our shores once again and the Diamonds could be winning their next World Cup gold medal in our backyard,” Mr Sidoti said
Netball is one of the most popular sports in NSW, with more than 117,000 members, across 120 associations and 4,145 clubs.
“This isn’t just a World Cup for Sydney… it’s a World Cup for regional NSW. We want everyone to be excited about this and get behind our bid.”
Netball NSW CEO Carolyn Campbell said she was delighted with the bid announcement.
“Netball is one of the most popular sports in Sydney and wider NSW, and some of the greatest names to have ever played the game hail from here,” she said.
“Sydney 2015 was a huge success and that has only made our netball community hungrier to deliver an even bigger and better World Cup in 2027.
“Our current Diamonds are off to Liverpool to try and bring more success back to Australia and there will be young, aspiring netballers following every step of their journey.”
Samsung Australia Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett said there’s no great honour than playing in a World Cup on home soil.
“Knowing the Netball World Cup will be hosted in New South Wales in 2027 would provide an incredible incentive for the next generation of elite netballers – it’s every young netballer’s dream to represent their country and, I can tell you, there’s no better place to do it than in Australia,” she said.
“We saw how beneficial the 2015 Netball World Cup was to netball participation in Australia – we now see eight of ten families involved in netball, either through playing, volunteering, coaching or assisting in the administration of the sport.”
Submissions for the 2027 World Cup will likely be made in early 2020.
